It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ruben Quintana Vasquez, a beloved member of the Marfa, Texas community, who left this earthly realm on September 15, 2026. Born on November 6, 1936, in Marfa, Ruben's life was a testament to resilience, love, and dedication. Ruben was the cherished son of Isabel B. Vasquez and Inez Quintana Vasquez. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Ernestine M. Vasquez, his brothers Uvaldo Q. Vasquez and Orlando Q. Vasquez, his sister Aurora V. Hernandez, and his beloved parents. Ruben is survived by his two nephews, Lionel Hernandez-Maywald and Daniel V. Hernandez, both residing in Marfa, and is remembered fondly by two grandchildren who brought him great joy. In December 1958, Ruben married the love of his life, Ernestine Mendoza, in a beautiful ceremony in Ft. Davis, Texas. Together, they embarked on a journey filled with love and mutual support. Though they did not have children of their own, their bond was an inspiration to all who knew them. Ruben's early years were marked by his passion for sports; he was an avid athlete who excelled in basketball and baseball. His love for the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Dodgers persisted throughout his life, and he was a dedicated fan who never missed a game. Ruben was also known for his musical talents, often bringing joy to family gatherings with his guitar and singing, always ready with a good joke to lighten the mood. Despite the challenges of balancing work and education, Ruben successfully completed four years of evening adult GED classes and proudly received his high school diploma from So. El Monte High School in Southern California. His determination and perseverance were evident in every aspect of his life. For over 40 years, Ruben was a valued member of the Teamster's Union, working as a forklift operator. Upon retirement, he returned to his cherished hometown of Marfa, where he became an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, nurturing his faith and community ties. Ruben's life was characterized by his golden heart, sharing kindness and living life to its fullest. He and Ernestine relocated to California, where they both found employment in the healthcare industry, working together in a hospital—a testament to their partnership and compassion. A heartfelt thank you is extended by Lionel and James Maywald to the Compassionate Care Nurses and Staff at Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Your diligence and compassion truly went beyond what was expected, and your kindness will never be forgotten. A service to celebrate Ruben's life will be held on November 6, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marfa, Texas. Friends and family are invited to gather in tribute to a life well-lived and a man deeply loved. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Ruben's memory to a charity of your choice, honoring his legacy of generosity and love. Ruben Quintana Vasquez will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
